P301 GERONIMO Feared by both American and Mexican settlers, Geronimo was the last of the great, courageous and determined Apache war leaders, who rebelled against the reservation system through a long bloody history of warfare. He led his band against the forces of the U.S. Army for 18 years and finally surrendered to Gen. Nelson Miles on September 4, 1886. The Great War chief, Geronimo, led aggressive rebellion against the injustices of the reservation system for 18 years. His surrender to General Cook in 1886, marked the end of Indian resistance in the Southwest. At age 76, he rode in the inaugural parade honoring Theodore Roosevelt. Photograph by Frank Randall, 1865
